Agriculture is a major force in the economy of Hawaii, with estimated overall farm and processed value of island-grown commodities at approximately $500 million. If you’re growing one of the more than 40 commercially grown crops on the islands, it’s important to manage your risk using all available tools.
There are USDA-backed Risk Management Agency Crop Insurance Policies for many of the crops that are grown in Hawaii. Currently programs are available for Nursery Crops, Macadamia Nuts, Macadamia Trees, and Tropical Fruit and Trees including Coffee, Bananas, and Papaya. AGR-Lite , a whole-farm revenue protection plan of insurance is also available.
AGR-Lite provides protection for most farm-raised crops, animals (including aquaculture), and animal products against low revenue due to unavoidable natural disasters and market fluctuations that affect income during the insurance year.
Growers must meet eligibility requirements to participate in any of the crop insurance programs.
Write your Congressional Representative and urge
that more valuable crop insurance programs be approved for Hawaii.
