
The Basics
The USDA-backed policy covers
plant loss or damage due to adverse weather,
fire, wildlife, earthquake and volcanic eruption.
Also covered are the following, if
due to the above listed causes:
- Inability to market plants failure of irrigation water
supply
- Plant damage resulting from reduction in power supply or
collapse of buildings or structures
Excluded causes are:
- Insects and disease UNLESS no effective control
measure exists;
- Cold temperatures, if protection is required
for the plant (unless the cold protection fails due to an insured
cause)
- Failure of plants to reach expected size
Coverage is available to wholesale
growers of field grown and container grown nursery stock and
liners. Plants must meet
all requirements for insurability including:
- Appear on USDA Risk Management Agency’s
Eligible Plant/Price listing
- Grown in a Nursery inspected and accepted
by the insuring company
- Grown under irrigation in appropriate medium,
with proper winter protection if required
- Minimum field grown size or pot size requirement
Not insurable: Stock
plants; Christmas Trees; Plants grown in pots less than 1” in
diameter, trays or flats without individual cells; Plants produced
in
containers
that contain two
or more different genera, species, subspecies, varieties
or cultivars.
Both container grown and field grown
practices are insurable separately. If you produce both, you
may insure either or both
practices. All plant categories within a practice must be insured.
